Two of the top products of the Garau dairy from Mandas were awarded at the Palazzo Brancaccio in Rome during the prestigious Top Italian Food 2024, a national competition that honors the best Made in Italy food excellence. The products that received the coveted award are the Granduca di Mandas and Su Nuraxi pecorino cheeses. The dairy founded by Antonio Garau in 1880 is the oldest in operation in Sardinia. “We produce high-quality pecorinos and refine and season them exclusively in our very old cellars that have been in uninterrupted use for more than 140 years,” stresses Marina Garau, Ceo and sales director of the company. Top Italian Food is promoted by Gambero Rosso, with the aim of rewarding food excellence from all over Italy. Granduca di Mandas is a pecorino with a fresh and fruity aroma with distinct lactic notes, a delicate flavor even with a maturation of more than 12 months, already awarded in 2022 by Gambero Rosso as the best Sardinian pecorino on the market and in 2023 with the World Cheese Adwards silver medal. Su Nuraxi, made exclusively from sheep’s milk, on the other hand, is called the king of traditional cheeses because of its very ancient origin. The now award-winning Mandas-based company also earned congratulations from Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida.
